The Trip To Bountiful

with Geraldine Page, John Heard, and Rebecca De Mornay

Geraldine Page won an Academy Award for her portrayal of an old woman who only wants to return to the place where she grew up before she dies. If that sounds like a downer, well, it isn’t, but have a hanky handy anyway.

My favorite line from the movie, one of the most profound lines I’ve ever heard or read, is: Me. You. Of course to get the full effect, you have to hear it in context. So go rent the movie. Or better yet buy a copy. It rewards repeated viewings.

Strangers in Good Company

with Mary Meigs and a cast of other unknowns

The Canadians are great at supporting small, independent films, and this is one of them. Watching it feels like spending an afternoon with friends. There’s not much of a plot. Just a group of old people sharing memories from their past and summing up their lives.

If you think that sounds about as interesting as watching paint dry, you’d be mistaken, but best to watch in a calm, contemplative mood and with an open heart.
